Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic and about 2 hours by train from Vienna. Close by to the hotel we were staying in there was a beautiful municipal park with many mature trees including Plane, Ash and Pine. In all there were five different species of woodpecker, the most common being Great Spotted, Middle Spotted and Syrian.
A single Black Woodpecker arrived, perched and then quickly departed and a Green Woodpecker was located by its characteristic call. In amongst the woodpeckers there was a mixed flock of noisy Fieldfares and some Hawfinches which mostly stayed near the tops of the trees. Nuthatches, Great Tits, Blue Tits and Goldfinches made up the numbers with a few Red Squirrels.
